Where Sailing Comes First

Where Sailing Comes First

It's a simple 'mantra' but it's one we love.  And it's true for Summer Sailstice.  Over the years people have suggested Summer Sailstice would be a much better event if we made it a 'boatstice' - you know an event that is for all boats, i.e. powerboats too. Now it's nothing against power boats - they start races, tow home sailors, rescue people and can be tons of fun.  Of course, it's a reciprocal arrangement, sailors do the same powerboaters and it's a code of the sea.   And certainly they are welcome to attend and support the Summer Sailstice global celebration of sailing.  But we wouldn't make powerboating part of Summer Sailstice any more than Antigua Sailing Week would have a powerboat division.  Or the New York Marathon would have a motorcycle division.

Like Antigua Sailing Week the focus of Summer Sailstice is sailing.  And also like Antigua Race Week there might be some great parties associated but without hoisting sails and participating in some great sailing it's not a sailing event.   There are tons of events for other outdoor activities but Summer Sailstice, like Antigua Sailing Week, is 'where sailing comes first!'  We like it that way.

Exchange a powerboat for the sailboat in this photo and you simply have a completely different relationship with Antigua, the breeze, the sea and, of course, sailing.

Antigua Sailing Week 2014 is April 26 to May 2.  If you've never done it you should make sure it's on your bucket list.  But don't save it for last - you'll want to return again and again.
