Scotch Bonnet Light Race, Genesee Yacht Club

This year, Summer Sailstice coincides with the 43rd Scotch Bonnet Light Race hosted by the Genesee Yacht Club. We are delighted to add our event to this global celebration of sailing! We start near sunset on Friday evening from the foot of the Genesee River, racing overnight across Lake Ontario to round the Scotch Bonnet Light (on the south shore of Canada) and return to Rochester Harbor the next day, covering approximately 92 NM. The race was originally designed as a test of navigation skills and an offshore challenge to regional racers. It has become an honored tradition and rite of passage for GYC members and Lake Ontario sailors, and is one of the first major racing events on the Lake every year. The weekend culminates with an Awards ceremony, picnic, live music and festivities on Sunday afternoon.

All offshore capable boats are welcome. For more information or to register for the race, visit our website at:, or our Facebook page:

We are delighted to add more activities to our action-packed weekend! There will be a Sailstice weekend/SBLR kick off party Friday night on the GYC porch. This is a great opportunity for those who are not involved in the race to participate in Sailstice weekend! Bid our racers Bon Voyage, then stick around for some fun of your own! BYOB and a dish to pass.

Anyone not racing the Scotch Bonnet Light Race is welcome to join the SBLR Sailstice Send-Off Celebration at Genesee Yacht Club, June 20 at 6:30 pm. Bring a dish to pass and your favorite beverage and we'll make some noise to cheer our the skippers and their crews as they head off to their overnight racing on the longest day of the year!

This is an excellent addition to our Sailstice weekend. I am looking into having the cannon fired at our solar noon, for the global relay...more to follow!
