53 teams departed Port Townsend, Washington on Thursday, June 4, at 5:30 am, headed for Victoria, BC in Stage 1 of the inaugural Race to Alaska (R2AK), an unique, non-motorized, 750-mile marathon geared toward long distance rowers, paddlers and sailors. 40 teams successully completed Stage 1, and 28 teams set out for Ketchikan, Alaska on June 7.
Team Elsie Piddock was the first team to finish (in just 5 days, 1 hour, and 55 minutes) and won $10,000. Second place, Team MOB Mentality, coming in 2 days later, was awarded a set of steak knives. As of mid-June, six teams have arrived in Ketchikan, with twelve teams still making their way up the Inside Passage. You can watch their progress on a live SPOT tracker. Teams hail from all over the US and Canada. The race is being hosted by the Northwest Maritime Center.
