As the wind filled the sails on the boat as it skimmed the waters near Kemah, the joy was evident on many of their faces as they learned the inner workings of a sailboat.

As a part of their sailing trips made available to residents with special needs or handicaps throughout the Houston area, Sailing Angels has worked for the past couple of years to bring the joy of sailing on the open waters in the bay to others.

There were around 14 different sailboats catering to families from the Kingwood area as well as other portions of the Houston area during their most recent sailing adventure called the “Summer Sailstice” on Saturday, June 21.

In addition to sailing with people with disabilities, Sailing Angels also had several groups of wounded warriors who were able to join them for a sail.

“This is our second annual ‘Summer Sailstice’ which is actually an international event that we wanted to bring to our area,” Kingwood resident Debbie Hughes, Sailing Angels founding director and marketing manager, said. “We have expanded our reach to not only take sailing children with special needs but adults with special needs as well and children who are living with terminal illnesses. Since we are so close to The Medical Center, our reach is huge and we have had the chance to sail with people from all over.”  Read On.
