Hobie Islands Celebrate Summer Sailstice

CALIFORNIA – Southwind Hobie Island Sailors, Newport Beach, CA.

Hobie Dealer: Southwind Kayak Center

Captain Dave Terry and wife, Susan led this year’s, Summer Sailstice Island sail group and said, “it was a blast.”  Dave said, “It was a fun summer day for the Southwind Hobie Island Sailors. We started out with a potluck lunch and discussed this summer’s sail plans. Then it was time to launch. “We set out from North Star beach sailing through Newport’s Back Bay into the very water sports active Newport Harbor, passing Balboa Island and the rocky jetties that leads out to sea. We followed the coast line south until we had a great view of Crystal Cove,” said Terry. Crystal Cove is a State  Marine Conservation Area (SMCA) located in Corona Del Mar which includes a lovely hillside bedroom community in Newport.

Dave recounted the elements that made it a perfect day, “temperature was mid 70’s with wind at 10-11 mph blowing on shore, which allowed for some great sailing.” With focus and ease the group tacked into the wind until they returned back to the harbor.  Terry emphasized, “with the wind behind us it was an easy cruise back to North Star beach.” Dave went on to recount some of the sailors who showed up that day, “Bill and Sandy brought their standard poodle, Austin who loves to sail, along with Luke and Joyce’s dogs.  Bruce and Debbie brought their Tandem Island on top of a VW THING.

Mark drove several hours from San Diego to attend with his Hobie Adventure Island.  "I saw everyone smiling - including the dogs!   It was really great to participate in a worldwide sailing event as a group of Hobie Island owners.“

Poodle owners Bill and Sandy add:

Sandy, Bill and dog Austin Gelnaw –

“We were so looking forward to being a part of the International Summer Sailstice that I'm glad we were able to participate.   We had a fun time sailing with the other Hobie Island owners and enjoyed the camaraderie that sailing with them brings.  So many people were enjoying the gorgeous weather, perfect for sailing. It was very busy boating day in sunny Newport Harbor.
