Chichester Race for 2016

Alameda Community Sailing Center is proud to be the host and organizing authority for the 2016 Chichester Race.

 

Prove Alameda is an island! Sail the whole way around it! Recent history has this sailed in Lasers, but this year it is open to all sailboats! But beware of the bridges. They are low and will not be opening for you. And beware of the mud. San Leandro Bay has surprises if you haven’t been there before. And to keep it fully scientific (part of our STEM curriculum), you can go either way around the Island! The goal is to have the current with you as capsize/swim/drift under the bridges. The race is an adventure and a ton of fun! Feel free to spread the word, and please be sure to illuminate the fact that the bridges are LOW.

 

Navigation charts indicate vertical clearance in the range of 13 to 16 feet. In the photos below you can see several solutions for getting a Laser under different bridges... Navigation charts will also show the mud and channel locations in San Leandro Bay. Prior to starting the circumnavigation, we will have an exhibition race in Seaplane Lagoon, part of the old Alameda Naval Air Station. The purpose of this race is to demonstrate to the City of Alameda that Seaplane Lagoon is much more attractive with sailboats sailing around in it, and it would be a great future location for Alameda Community Sailing Center. Seaplane Lagoon is the rectangle in the center-right of the photograph.

 

The Notice of Race will be available soon on the ACSC web site: SailAlameda.org. We have also started Thursday evening Laser sailing through the end of Daylight Savings Time out of our site by Encinal High School. And no, you don’t have to have a Laser... Our current site is close to the running track visible in the lower-left of the below image. You can find a link with directions on our web site.
