Summer Sailstice - Sail locally, celebrate globally

"This is a great idea. We love to get folks out on their boats having fun in a non-competitive manner."

The Muncie Sailing Club of Prairie Creek, Indiana, Ushers In Summer Sailstice
With the “Call of the Conch”

The day’s activities will begin with two members sounding conch shells on the lake in front of the harbor at 4:00 pm.  The haunting sound of the conch shells will resonate across the lake as members meet on the water at the entrance to the harbor.  Keeping in touch via VHF radios, they will then sail in concert to the north end of the lake.  This will take an hour or so, as they will be executing 180 and 360-degree turns in unison.  The faster boats will continually move to the rear of the fleet in order to keep the group together.  On the return, they will beat back and cross tack. Half of the boats will start from the eastern edge and the other half from the western edge of the lake. If there happens to be a reaching wind, they will continue on with 180 and 360-degree turns.  On the 180-degree turns they sail to a count and then turn back.  After sailing, members can look forward to wine and cheese and an open grill.  Members will bring a side to pass.

The Muncie Sailing Club is an active sailing club located on beautiful Prairie Creek Reservoir just a few miles southeast of Muncie, Indiana. The club provides facilities for mooring and launching sailboats, facilitating various training programs and social, racing and sailing programs.

Sailing events include both competitive racing and non-competitive sailing events. Moonlight sails and "sailing in concert" on holidays have become very popular sails. They conduct a competitive racing event nearly every Sunday of the season, including the annual "Mayor's Cup" and "Ladies Only" regattas. Socials include a variety of events such as Memorial Day Breakfast, Harbor Dance, Raft Up feasts and Labor Day Steak Grill.

Muncie Sailing Club was founded in 1961 and has grown to over 100 household memberships with in-water slips for over 70 boats and over 60 dry-sail spaces. The Club has evolved into a high quality facility for sailing thanks to the generosity of many individual sailors who continue to donate their talent and labor to the Club!
