If you sail on Long Island's South shore, you're invited to join the South Bay Cruising Club Summer Sailstice Rendezvous!
For 2005, our Summer Sailstice event will be a sailboat rendezvous in the Great River (a.k.a., Connectquot River), near Oakdale, New York - about 47 miles due east of the Statue of Liberty. This is a free event, and is open to non-members.
The Great River is a beautiful boating destination, with nearby attractions available by dinghy such as two restaurants, the Bayard Cutting Arboretum (a New York State Park complete with a mansion), and a nearby system of more than 3 miles of canals that can be explored.
More information on the Bayard Cutting Arboretum is available on their web page: Bayard Cutting Arboretum
Our rendezvous will start around noon on Saturday as the sailboats arrive to raft up at anchor in the Great River. Around 4 p.m. the dutch treat cocktail and snacks party starts, continuing until dusk- which, on June 18th, will be later than any other Saturday evening of the year. Then the night-owls continue partying on whichever sailboats are staying up late while the early morning risers start to turn in for the night.
In good weather it's common to see our club members filling up the deck space of a few rafted-up sailboats, as pictured here on another summer evening. Those sailboats who are not rafted up typically anchor nearby and dinghy their way over to the host or party boats. It is common for us to have anywhere from a dozen to three dozen SBCC sailboats at a typical rendezvous event.
Sunday usually ends up with the sailboats leaving to return home around noon, depending on who has to return to work Monday and how long is their return trip.
On either day of an SBCC rendezvous, it is common to see the attendees playing with their water toys such as kayaks, sailing dinghies and sailboards. Our SBCC rendezvous have been a great activity for sailing friends and family. We look forward to meeting everyone for a great Summer Sailstice evening! For more information contact:

A few words about the SBCC -
The SBCC is a not-for-profit club organized in 1951 and currently containing about 250 families in our membership. We promote sailing and racing under sail in the Great South Bay of Long Island, New York, and nearby waters. This is a very active group with rendezvous every weekend of the summer, sailing races typically twice a week during the racing season, and extended cruises of one to three weeks in the warm weather.
As a Corinthian-style club, we do all our own events with membership dues and event fees, without corporate sponsorship. There are no charges for people to join us in our rendezvous or cruising events. Our racing events require SBCC membership.
Our club has multiple members who have circumnavigated the globe in their own sailboat or a sailboat of a club member. One of our club members is currently out on his 3rd circumnavigation. We typically have about 6 club member sailboats down in the Florida/Caribbean area each winter, including this winter, and who return each spring to the Great South Bay.
More information about our club is available on our website: http://www.sbccsail.org
