Newburyport, MA - Summer Sailstice to be celebrated by the Newburyport Maritime Society

During the Summer Sailstice weekend the Newburyport Maritime Society (NMS) will be celebrating its 30th birthday with marine heritage activities at its Newburyport waterfront facilities. NMS is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and interpreting the maritime heritage of the lower Merrimack Valley.  The NMS owns and operates the Custom House Maritime Museum in Newburyport and Lowell's Boat Shop .
The Mighty Merrimack Rowing Race - On Saturday morning, June 18, NMS will kick off the 2-day birthday celebration with its Mighty Merrimack Rowing Race from Lowell's Boat to the Custom.  The race is for experienced rowers only and is open to all fixed-seat rowing boats, kayaks, and recreational (ocean) shells. Pre-registration is required.
The Magnificent Maritime Marketplace - From 10:00 a.m. to 5 p.m., behind the Custom House, more than 100 maritime and marine merchants will be selling their wares at the Magnificent Maritime Marketplace. Vendors will be displaying and demonstrating marine products, services and arts and crafts.
Children’s Programming - From 1 to 5 p.m., special programs for children will be provided, including knot-tying lessons and instruction on model boat building.
Seafood from local restaurateurs will please the palate, and the tunes of the Ancient Mariners Dixieland Band will echo against the walls of the Custom House from 1 to 4 p.m.
Breakfast - On Sunday, the Marketplace continues with a Father's Day Breakfast from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. Dad, have your picture taken with your kids in an authentic Lowell's dory and play a game of tug-o-war.  A few surprises are in store for all!
Surprises do not include shipwrecking! – the historic photo shown here is from the Maritime Society’s exhibit on local shipwrecks—lots more of these fascinating amateur photographs can be seen at the museum.
