"This is a great idea. We love to get folks out on their boats having fun in a non-competitive manner."

What Are Sailors Doing To Celebrate Summer Sailstice?

Summer Sailstice Sleepover - Corinthian Yacht Club San Francisco Bay, CA

The Corinthian Yacht Club has created a unique celebration to coincide with sailing's new holiday, Summer Sailstice. In 2002, Summer Sailstice falls on Friday June 21, coinciding with CYC's regular weekly beer can races, as well as falling neatly between the end of the school year and the start of summer sailing.

Always one of the more popular beer can racing series on the SF Bay, Commodore Dan Carrico suggested that the CYC celebrate Summer Sailstice 2002 with the first CYC Summer Sailstice Sleepover. The CYC invites members and guests down to the club for a sleepover aboard their boats to kick off the summer sailing season on the longest sailing day and shortest sailing night of the year.

The usual Friday night buoy race will provide the starting point before a buffet dinner and awards ceremonies. Following, all registered race boats, Corinthian members and harbor tenants are welcome to spend the night aboard. A simple breakfast fare is planned for the morning of June 22nd.

Corinthian Yacht Club's unique idea is sure to be fun in the spirit of the solstice and is representative of the many creative ways in which Summer Sailstice can be celebrated. "I love spending a night aboard the boat in the harbor and Summer Sailstice is another great reason to do just that," said Commodore Carrico.

Summer Sailstice is a great opportunity for sailors anywhere to all sail on the same day and connect via the website, www.summersailstice.com. Sailors are encouraged to celebrate sailing by taking to the water on June 21st wherever they sail. The Summer Sailstice web site helps let people know what is going on in their area and provide a network for sailors looking for crew, and sailors wanting a boat to crew on.
