Summer Sailstice - Sail locally, celebrate globally

"This is a great idea. We love to get folks out on their boats having fun in a non-competitive manner."

Sailors from 34 states and 3 Canadian provinces celebrating Summer Sailstice

With only a day left until 'Summer Sailstice 2002', sailors from all over the US and Canada have signed up to celebrate sailing on June 21st, the longest sailing day of the year. All kinds of boats sailing in all kinds of places are getting out on the water to participate in this new holiday for sailors.

While registrations are concentrated in the coastal states, with many in California where the event was initiated, sailors from Utah, Montana, Idaho, Arkansas and Missouri plus many others are finding reason to celebrate on their home waters.

In addition to a broad geographical distribution of sailors there are numerous boats represented from Lasers and a Jet 14 to a Contest 48, Valiant 50 and everything in between. There are as many ways to sail as there are places to sail. Cruisers, racers, daysailers, boardsailers and all of those who enjoy getting out on the water have a good reason to take some time off and get back to sailing for the fun of it.

With a long term goal of creating a 'real' holiday for it is hoped by 2005 when June 21st falls on a Monday all sailors will get the day off and have a three day weekend for Summer Sailstice! 'That's the incentive plan' states John Arndt, one of the event organizers 'It's an event you can help create that won't make you work weekends and could actually make your weekend longer. Of course the prizes available aren't a bad reason to sign up either'

So sailors all over the country are 'joining together' to sail wherever they are, however they like as part of celebrating and enjoying the beginning of the long summer of sailing ahead. Perhaps you know sailors in the other 16 states that are 'missing' that could help get the celebration going in all 50! Pass the word and, who knows, as this grows maybe sailors will have one more day off to enjoy on the water!
