Share the Bay: Sharkfest Swim on June 21, 2014

Are these guys crazy?  Sailing San Francisco Bay can be tough enough but swimming across the entrance of the Bay, under the Golden Gate Bridge would be very challenging. For Summer Sailstice 2014 sailors will be sharing the Bay with swimmers doing just that.

Dave Horning, founder of the nationwide Sharkfest Swim, emailed to say, 'June 21, 2014 will also be the date of our 4th annual Golden Gate Sharkfest Swim across the harbor entrance from the south tower to East Ft. Baker. You can read about it on our website www.sharkfestswim.com or www.envirosports.com I grew up sailing on the bay and it paid off in spades when I started doing Alcatraz and other bay swims because I had become so familiar with tidal currents. It probably even allowed me to win a few races over faster (less knowledgeable) swimmers. Local knowledge always pays off.'

Like sailors everywhere we'll also be sharing the Bay with kakers, SUP's and many other like-minded folks who like the pleasures and challenges of cavorting with wind, water, sails and nature in general.  If you're near the GG bridge on June 21 perhaps you can help keep an eye out to help any swimmers if needed!

'This is what you do if you don't have a boat!'

Funny, but just recently, while taking some pictures of the recent RCP Tiburon Mile swim from Angel Island to the Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon, the swimmer above paused to look up as he swam by the swim platform of the boat I was shooting from and said, 'This is crazy, this is what you do if you don't have a boat!'.  It's a mile-long, very chilly swim in the September waters of San Francisco Bay.
