Photo Contest Go Pro HD 3 Winner!

FLYC Poker Run Fun Cruise on Folsom Lake. Here are some photos from the sunset the night before Summer Sailstice and a picture of the overnight raft up!  Looks like Mark and the crew had a great Summer Sailstice!  They have won a Go Pro HD3 camera for their participation!

They are really excited about the video projects they will be able to shoot with their new GoPro!  Here is an article they shared from their newsletter:

Poker Run & Camp out Will Deutsch

The inaugural FLYC poker run camp out was pretty awesome. We had two Catalina 22s (the Werders and Craig Wilson), a Catalina 250 (the Strains), a Santana 23 (the Johnsons), and our Santana 20 (Katie, Maddie, and the author). This time all the boats left at about the same time. We were all out on the course about the same time.

Katie and Maddie worked together to drive the boat about ½ the time as we went around the course counter clockwise. Once we got to mark 8 we set the kite – which was good until a short while later when a bee landed on Maddie’s lifejacket and the girls both started screaming and panicking until I shoed it away. The girls got a good lesson on shifting wind and spinnaker trim.

Four Sirens made it to the New York Cove with the whole group. It was certainly a different experience then sailing in after sunset. There were a LOT of boats in the fork. However, as we partied across the raft up more and more boats left and went in or to other areas of the lake. We ate dinner and appetizers and dessert. Dave and Lanette played host. They demonstrated how the Catalina 250 is a great cruising boat.

Slowly we all went to bed. The night was nicely uneventful. No anchors dragging, no rocking or rolling in the wind.  The morning dawned cool and cloudy. The wind was forecast to come up and rain was also coming. Everyone downsized sails and prepared for the return trip.  Leaving the south fork was pretty uneventful. The wind in the fork was between 0 and 14kts and clocked around a bit. The wind on the lake was a lot more powerful.

The wind was blowing; the water was rolling and boiling. For the first time on a boat the girls were not comfortable. More accurate would be to say Maddie was scared. I couldn’t take the boat upwind because the healing was really bothering Maddie which bothered Katie.  In retrospect I should have traded Maddie to a cruising boat on the way back in.  By the time we got to the marina the girls were happy again. They enjoyed driving the boat into marina under motor and helping put the sails away.

Commodore's Column:

Dubbed the FLYC poker run, participants were given a course to follow and all had a chance to win a special poker prize. The prize was a cherry wood card box engraved for the event and it contained a set of high end plastic playing cards. The winning hand belonged to Dave and Lanette Strain with a pair of Queens. Everyone including 3 kids and two dogs enjoyed the raft up by sharing drinks, snacks and stories. I hope to bring this event back in 2014 and get even more boats in the raft up.

 Newsletter Editor:

A few weeks ago we had the new camping overnight/ poker run. It was after the Bigs and Littles event. Both events were a lot of fun and well put together. It seemed that our friends from the Big Brothers and Big Sisters had a lot of fun too. The poker run and campout was a blast. We had a handful of boats, two dogs, 3 kids, and a bunch of adults. Dave and Lanette were shanghaied/quilted into coming and proved to be great company on an overnight.

Thanks again for the great prize and managing such a great program to get people out on the water, we will certainly be participating in the 2014 summersailstice. Can't wait!!
