MD - O'Day/Cal/Ranger Rendezvous With Supermoon and Midnight Squalls

Summer Sailstice aims to connect people locally while we all celebrate globally and that's just what happened on the Chesapeake.  Jim Gravelle wrote in with this report of a pleasant Friday/Saturday and less pleasant, but still fun, Sunday morning!

The “Sailstice Rendezvous” was billed as providing fun, fellowship, and good food. As will be seen below, this Rendezvous included some adventure. The Rendezvous started on Friday, June 21 with the host boat arriving at Dun Cove, Maryland, to secure a spot for the raft-up. There ultimately were at least 16 boats in the Cove, including a few other raft-ups, so an early arrival was a good idea. One of the boats on our raft was “Boomerang”, a 1980 Cal 39’ Mark II, which had substantial upgrading and work done to her last year and is featured in the March-April 2013 edition of “Good Old Boat”.  Needless to say, a tour of “Boomerang” was a must.

A highlight of the Rendezvous was the Saturday afternoon hors d’oeuvres, which was fabulous, ranging from sweet and spicy meatballs, prosciutto and melon, cheese, olives, to vegetables and fruit. While the food was great, the highlight of the get-together was meeting new friends, learning about each other’s lives, and, of course, discussing boats. Everyone enjoyed the super moon that evening that lit up the Cove like day time, which proved to be fortuitous. After turning in and around midnight Sunday morning, the wind and chop, not predicted, significantly increased and the anchor boat’s anchor started to drag. The raft up was quickly disassembled and each boat sought individual anchorages. All this was handled calmly but did add a little adventure to the night.

It was raining steadily on Sunday morning and more rain and afternoon thunderstorms were predicted, so after expressing thanks to all for a great Rendezvous, all the boats went their own way. All in all, a great time was had by everyone, and all are looking forward to the next Rendezvous.

The raft up formed in Dun Cove.

Really, we hear he's a nice guy and was welcomed back aboard the raft up.  Saturday was looking good!

Supermoon for a super night....up until about Midnight.

Dun Cove was the sweet spot on the Chesapeake.
