Cass Gidley Marina, a Sausalito community sailing center used Summer Sailstice as an opportunity to raise funds to support boating access on the historic Sausalito, California waterfront. Sausalito has a long and storied sailing heritage but, like so many once busy waterfronts, many local residents don't have easy access or know how to get from the land out on to the water. Cass Gidley is a new community sailing center helping change that so more people can get out on the water. Summer Sailstice was a chance to further that mission.

Cass Gidley Marina - A Sausalito Community Boating Center “Sailstice - Dinner and a Movie”
On June 21st, the evening of the 2014 Summer Solstice, the Sausalito Community Boating Center at Cass Marina treated guests to an outstanding event with music, food, drinks and a free showing of the documentary film, “Maidentrip” at Sausalito’s Dunphy Park, all to benefit the Community Boating Center. The event was a “Summer Sailstice” event.

Fiver Brown of the Marin County-based band, Dredgetown kicked off the evening with soulful folk rock originals. The crowd of more than 150 people relaxed to the music while enjoying delicious seafood and vegetarian paella and salad graciously provided by Chef Davey Jones of Davey Jones Deli in Sausalito. Some attendees arrived by canoe and enjoyed a swim in Richardson Bay before dinner. Others strolled, biked or drove down to the waterfront to enjoy a balmy evening under the stars. Even Mother Nature cooperated by keeping Mr. Fog at bay. The Sausalito Community Boating Center information booth was brimming with activity the entire night selling food and beverage tickets, supplying information about Cass Gidley Marina, selling raffle tickets, and getting everyone situated.
As dusk settled, the oversized inflatable screen showcased “Maidentrip”, the true story of a Laura Dekker, a 14 year-old Dutch girl who overcame court battles and public opinion to fulfill her dream of becoming the youngest person ever to make a solo sail around the world. The film won numerous awards at the Camden International Film festival, the South by Southwest Film Festival, and Mountain Film in Telluride. More information can be found at www.maidentrip.com.

Cass Gidley Marina - a Sausalito Community Boating Center's mission is to preserve a gathering place on Sausalito’s unique waterfront to engage and educate the public about our rich maritime history and small craft heritage through direct, affordable experience. The Community Boating Center will advocate environmental awareness, seamanship and safety, promote the use building, and display of traditional wooden boats and maritime crafts and teach life skills through maritime education. It will be a place for local maritime groups to hold classes, access the waterfront, and build community through outreach.
