Announcing Video Contest Powered by Harken

SAN ANSELMO, CALIFORNIA (June 5, 2015) – For the 15th annual global celebration of sailing Summer Sailstice and Harken have teamed up to inspire sailors to bring the spectacular, action-packed world of sailing to life by submitting their best video shot on the weekend of June 20th.

Summer Sailstice exists to connect sailors when they start their summer of sailing by hoisting sails on the summer solstice weekend of June 20/21. The video contest gives sailors an additional opportunity for sailors to win and to showcase the best of their slice of the multi-dimensional world of sailing. The videos will also give non-sailors an opportunity to get a much broader perspective of the whole world of sailing.

To participate sailors must post their sailing plans on the Summer Sailstice website and can upload their video to the contest page after the Sailstice weekend. First, second and third place winners will be chosen from videos with a maximum length of one minute that captures the best of sailing life. This will include but is not limited to great sailing action, festive sailing celebrations, the beauty of sail or simply the most fun and entertaining video.

‘Sailing is a live action activity. We wanted to reach out beyond the professional events and connect with the kind of grass roots sailing we see right here on Pewaukee Lake,’ said Jim Anderson Sales Manager at Harken. ‘We have fabulous scow action on the lake, and know our customers are participating in cruising rallies, crossing oceans and enjoying sailing in different ways and places much of the world never gets to see. We wanted to help Summer Sailstice give everyone an opportunity to showcase the kind of sailing they enjoy and offer some rewards for the best videos out there.’

Skip Novak of Pelagic Expeditions invite you to sail for Summer Sailstice.

Of course conditions and sailing styles vary so the video contest is not requiring a race, a cruise or even wind! The goal is to demonstrate why sailors enjoy sailing—be it escape, socializing, racing and however they get out on the water with sails. The solstice starts the summer, gives everyone lots of daylight and therefore lots of time to go sailing and shoot some video.

‘Harken has produced and distributed lots of fantastic sailing videos so it was exciting when we started talking about creating an opportunity for Summer Sailstice sailors to submit videos of their local sailing to our video collection’ says Summer Sailstice founder John Arndt. ‘Volvo race video is out of this world but collecting video of a competitive Snipe regatta, a sailing Margaritaville party on the shores of the Chesapeake, a raft-up in an idyllic anchorage or the laughter dockside at a community sailing center open house are all visions of sailing the world will enjoy.’

The video contest is open to everyone sailing the weekend of June 19-21 in the US and Canada. Sailors on their own individual sailing adventures are also encouraged to submit video or Instagram submissions with the hashtag #Sailstice15. Of course the event aims to encourage everyone to sail on the solstice weekend to create a moment when all sailors can sail together and, if they’re not sailing then, their summer is already off to a bad start!

Prizes include Harken gear bags with a variety of sailing accessories from Harken, Summer Sailstice and other marine suppliers. The first prize winner includes the awesome GoPro Hero3+ so the winner will help us all capture more and better sailing video.

The Summer Sailstice website allows everyone to create or find an event or sailing opportunity near them. Then, when sails are hoisted, it will make event more sense to capture your adventure on camera!
