All Day Long - Cruising Compass from the Pacific Nowrthwest

Cruising Compass Editor Andrew Cross recalls Summer Sailstice 2013 as he looked forward to 2014:

The sun had set, but the beauty of twilight remained well after. It was the longest day of 2013–15 hours and 59 minutes of daylight–and we sat at anchor enjoying the last remnants of light until well after 10 p.m. The day marked the beginning of the summer cruising season; and what a season it would turn out to be, as we explored our way north and south throughout the Puget Sound.

Though I generally don’t need an occasion like Summer Sailstice to get me out for a sail, I’ve always appreciated the inspiration and camaraderie behind the event. Started over a decade ago to get more people out sailing on the longest day of the year, and to promote sailing in general, there will be exciting Sailstice events taking place this Saturday worldwide. But you don’t necessarily have to join a big event to be part of the action. Just heading out on the water and enjoying the day is what it’s all about. So whether you are racing your way towards Bermuda, rafting up with a group of friends, day sailing on your home waters, or are off cruising far and wide, enjoy the Northern Hemisphere’s longest day of the year.

Enjoy this week’s edition.
