OUR OCEAN CONSERVATION PARTNER: SAILORS FOR THE SEA
For 2009, Summer Sailstice has aligned with Sailors for the Sea to engage sailors with the leading advocate for wild, healthy oceans. Sailors for the Sea works to connect sailors to programs promoting healthy and diverse ocean ecosystems protecting the environment in which we sail!
Mission:
Sailors for the Sea is a
nonprofit organization that educates and empowers the boating community
to protect and restore our oceans and coastal waters. It's programs include 'Around the Americas', 'Clean Regattas', a film 'A Sea Change', 'Rainy Day Kits'. They're all designed to help sailors help the sea.
A primary mission for Summer Sailstice will be to support the 'Around the Americas' project. Here's how it's described:
Our
mission is to build awareness throughout the Americas so that citizens
understand the precipitous changes that are occurring at the poles and
along our coasts and what they can do to mitigate these changes.
The Around the Americas
Project is a circumnavigation, by sailboat, of the North and South
American continents as though they were one, gigantic island. Project
Director and Captain Mark Schrader will depart Seattle in May 2009
sailing his 64 foot boat, Ocean Watch, through the Northwest Passage, down the east coast, around Cape Horn and up the west coast returning to Seattle in July 2010.
Participants in Summer Sailstice are invited to help support 'Sailors for the Sea' and 'The Around the Americas' project as a way of making each mile you sail contribute to a cleaner ocean.
We philosophically support the mission of the following organizations:
